It shows readiness when we take the guard. We are prepared for the unexpected. We might not be able to handle it. However, we are ready to face it.
Preparation in anticipation of the unexpected is a good contingency plan. Our expectations stem from our past experience of how things work. There is always room for corner cases that stump us, and then something we did not expect derails our plan. It's disappointing to be in a situation we are not ready for.
When we take a guard, we know we need to face each situation coming away with equal diligence and great interest. And if things do not go our way, it ends our present effort, but we have to move on and prepare better for the next attempt.
The state of alertness comes from revisiting where we are and knowing that there will be a surprise in store, no matter our readiness.
Take a moment; take a fresh guard. Often.
